Because of the Corona virus the Liberation celebrations in Dachau have been cancelled.
The planned commemorations of the Dachau and Flossenbürg concentration camps on 3 May and 26 April, 2020 on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of their liberation, have been cancelled due to the Corona virus. The decision was taken by mutual agreement between the Chairman of the Board of the Bavarian Memorials Foundation (FMD) Prof. Dr. Michael, FMB director Karl Freller, President of the International Dachau Committee (CID) Jean-Michel Thomas, spokesperson for survivors of the Flossenbürg concentration camp Dr. Jack Terry, as well as the director of the Dachau concentration camp memorial Dr. Gabriele Hammermann, and the director of the Flossenbürg concentration camp memorial Dr. Jörg Skriebeleit.
This decision is hard for everyone involved. It is linked to cancellations of events as recommended by the Bavarian State Government and the Robert Koch Institute. And has also been taken in close coordination with the directors of the other memorials of the concentration camps in the Federal Republic of Germany who face the same problem.
For the events planned at Dachau and Flossenbürg, 100 survivors and liberators had promised to attend. The director of the Foundation, Karl Freller, insists that the measure is absolutely necessary: "Safety and health, in particular of the elderly, prisoners, liberators and their relatives, are first priority."
According to Mr. Freller, a solution is currently being sought to adequately highlight and recognise, in particular in the media, the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the concentration camps. It is being studied to what extent part of the activities planned for this year could be integrated into the official commemoration of the 76th anniversary in 2021.
